Family Fun in the Smokies

With all the regular hustle and bustle of everyday life, I’m sure we all look forward to those vacations where we finally get to spend some uninterrupted time with our loved ones. It’s our chance to catch up with one another and spend time laughing and creating new memories to carry with us. It’s always exciting when we can find a place to visit that we know everyone will have a good time while on the trip. The beautiful Smoky Mountains are such a popular destination to visit because we have everything you may be looking for in a vacation. From attractions to incredible hikes and everything else in between, we know that your family will be talking about your trip for years to come! Whether you’ve traveled here before or not, there’s always something new to take advantage of. There’s nothing better than enjoying some Family Fun in the Smokies, so let’s see what kind of adventures y’all can go on while you’re in the area!

Fun in the Sun

Fun in the Smokies-Dollywood Barbecue and Bluegrass

Barbecue and Bluegrass at Dollywood

The warm Spring weather is about to arrive and it’s time to start soaking up the sunshine again. The Smokies are home to so many incredible outdoor activities to try out. It’s almost impossible to list all of them, but we will narrow it down to some of our personal favorites! Dollywood is a staple when visiting Pigeon Forge and we know if you want to enjoy some time outdoors, this is where you’ll want to be. From rides to shows and even some delicious food, this family friendly amusement park truly has it all. The Wildwood Grove expansion is also opening soon and will offer even more amazing activities and thrills to enjoy. Don’t forget to also check out their Barbecue & Bluegrass Festival that will go on from May 24th through June 2nd. Another great place to visit is the Smoky Mountain Deer Farm and Exotic Petting Zoo in Sevierville. This locally owned and operated farm offers more than just a petting zoo – they also have riding stables and pony rides! While the zoo is still our favorite part, it’s just a fun place all around. You’ll love getting to see and feed the beautiful animals while enjoying the fantastic weather outside. Anakeesta in Gatlinburg offers a bunch of exhilarating outdoor activities for us adrenaline junkies, but also some more relaxing things to do as well. They have ziplining, a canopy walk, treehouse playground, a garden walk, wildfire memorial, quaint stores (for us shopaholics), restaurants, and more! You’ll also get to see beautiful mountain views especially when riding their one of a kind chondola to the top. It’s a great place to visit when it’s a sunny day outside.

Time to Cool Off

After enjoying so much fun in the sun, you’ll need to find some exciting ways to cool off. The Outdoor Gravity Park in Pigeon Forge offers a truly unique and thrilling way to beat the spring heat. This is Family Fun in the Smokies at its best. Climb aboard their very own zorb (a plastic ball of sorts filled with water) that is specially designed to roll down a 1000 ft hill (there’s three of them) with absolutely no tumbling. You can even jump in one as a group and rock and roll all the way to the bottom! They also give you a gopro to record your journey and you have the option of buying the video after. Talk about a real adrenaline rush. Pigeon Forge is also home to Dollywood’s Splash Country. From thrilling water slides to a relaxing lazy river, this park has something for everyone to do. Here you will find the RiverRush, which according to their website, is the first and only water coaster of its kind in Tennessee. There’s also kiddie play zones, a wave pool, poolside retreat, and so much more. You can easily spend a day here with the family! If you’re looking for a real adrenaline rush, we recommend hitting up the whitewater. Big Creek Expeditions offers an incredible and unforgettable whitewater rafting adventure. Get ready to twist and turn through class III-IV rapids with an experienced tour guide on your side. We can guarantee this is one you all will be talking about for days. You also receive a free rafting admission as a thank you for being our guest! Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area in Wears Valley is another one of our favorite places to visit. You can enjoy playing in the river while grilling up some delicious burgers and hotdogs for lunch. You want to make sure to get here early so you can get a good spot. Don’t forget you can also take advantage of fishing and playing in the river on-site at Cedar Lodge as well as our outdoor pool!

Let’s Hit the Trails

One of the most popular things to do in the Smokies is hiking and during the spring is a time that just can’t be beat. While there are so many to choose from, we’ll narrow it down to a few that we’d recommend the most. We’ll start off with a couple of waterfall hikes. Grotto Falls is always the first one that comes to mind. It’s a moderate hike that leads you out to see a beautiful 25 foot tall waterfall. You can also take the Trillium Gap Trail which brings you through a hemlock forest and right behind the waterfall itself. This is a must do if you love scenic hikes. Rainbow Falls is probably my favorite one of all and you might be able to guess by the name why that is. If you visit on a clear and sunny day, you can actually see a rainbow that is produced by the mist of this absolutely magical 80-foot high waterfall. It’s also considered to be a moderate trail. There’s also some great kid-friendly hikes as well for everyone to go on. Porters Creek is a very popular trail where you’ll get to see historic farmsteads and the Ownby Cemetery. It’s full of history and it’s a very easy trail to hike. The Alum Bluff Cave Trail is another great hike to go on with the family. You’ll get to see beautiful scenic views of creeks, small waterfalls, wildflowers, forests, and more. It’s a very well maintained trail which will lead you to seeing Arch Rock. This special landmark will be one you’ll never forget getting to see. Family Fun in the Smokies-hiking
